NHRC notice to Tamil Nadu government over spurious liquor case

Officials said on Tuesday that the National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) has submitted complaints to the Tamil Nadu government and the state police chief over the deaths of several individuals who were reportedly involved in the consumption of spurious liquor in the Villupuram and Chengalpattu districts.

According to a statement from the commission, it appears that the state legislature did not enact legislation outlawing the sale and consumption of illegal or spurious liquor.

The NHRC has taken suo motu notice of media reports that several individuals died  and a number of others have been admitted to hospitals in Tamil Nadu’s Villupuram and Chengalpattu districts since May 12.

According to state officials, at least 20 people have already died after ingesting spurious liquor, and more than 50 more have been hospitalised.
