In Tamil Nadu, the prohibition on the production, holding, transporting, distributing, and selling of chewable food products has been extended for a year more.
“The ban on the manufacture, storage, transportation, distribution, or sale of chewable food products like gutka, tobacco, and nicotine-containing pan masala has been extended for one more period in Tamil Nadu,” stated the commissioner of the Food Safety and Drug Administration. According to a gazette published by the state government, “with effect from May 23, 2023.”
This comes after the Madras High Court’s 2013 judgement torn down the prohibition was overturned by the Supreme Court.
