A Manhattan federal court jury found former US President Donald Trump guilty of sexually assaulting magazine writer E. Jean Carroll in the 1990s and defaming her by calling her a liar, dealing him a legal defeat. On Tuesday, the jury of nine—six men and three women—awarded a total of $5 million in compensatory and punitive damages. After less than three hours of deliberation, the jury unanimously decided in favour of Carroll, rejecting Trump’s denial of the attack.

The 79-year-old Carroll testified during the civil trial that the 76-year-old Trump sexually assaulted her in a dressing room at a Bergdorf Goodman store in Manhattan in either 1995 or 1996. Trump damaged her reputation by calling her claims a “complete con job,” “a hoax,” and other derogatory terms.
