India has slipped to the 161st position out of 180 countries in the latest World Press Freedom Index released on Monday. The report, compiled by Reporters Without Borders, cited various factors including “legal action against journalists, censorship, and intimidation” for India’s drop in the ranking. This is the lowest ranking India has received in the index since its inception in 2002.
The report also highlighted the increasing use of internet shutdowns and the targeting of journalists critical of the government. India was ranked 142 in the 2020 and 2021 index.
